Saint Louis Chamber Chorus "Opposites Attract: War and Peace"

The Chamber Chorus concludes its 69th season and the exploration of opposites with a program exploring both War and Peace. Anchoring the program will be two cantatas, one lamenting war and the other hailing peace, by Darius Milhaud. Like this French composer, who had to flee the Nazis because of his Jewish faith, so too did Vally Weigl abandon her home city of Vienna in 1938. Carving a new life in the USA, she wrote beautifully crafted songs that reflected her faith and advocacy for world peace: some of these will receive their St. Louis première on Sunday, May 25, when the Chamber Chorus makes their first visit to Temple B’Nai Amoona.

This is a stunning blend of form and light by the late Gyo Obata, one of America’s greatest architects, and offers uninterrupted sightlines and a supportive acoustic for the choir’s repertoire, sung entirely without accompaniment. Other rarities on the program include songs of peace by Edward Elgar and Villa-Lobos, and Hebrew psalms by Clare Maclean and Salamone Rossi. The concert at 3 pm will demonstrate what the Chamber Chorus does best in its exploration of neglected masterworks, advocacy for women composers, and celebration of St. Louis’s built heritage.
