Playlist for Sound Salvation on July 27, 2007.

Song Title Artist Album Label
Planet Earth  Prince  Planet Eart Columbia  *
At this stage, I think Prince is settling into a comfortable niche as a very good, but no longer great, songwriter. I think this song has the most originality shown on his new record, not to mention the most ambition.
Dance Tonight  Paul McCartney  Memory Almost Full MPL  *
I'm still loving this record, even though some people I know are stubbornly resisting it.
--------  --------  -------- --------
Final Frontier  Loudon Wainwright III  Strange Weirdos Concord  *
Loudon with impeccable guitar accompaniment by Richard Thompson. That's a very good thing.
Sneaky Boy  Richard Thompson  Sweet Warrior Shout! Factory  *
Here's Richard Thompson accompnaying himself. Allow me to interject a complaint at this time: I intended to play Rufus Wainwright in this set, but the CD is missing from the library here at the station. Oh, sure, somebody probably just borrowed it to burn a copy, but that's plain rude, people. UPDATE: Oops, I found it. As Emily Litella used to say, "Never mind."
--------  --------  -------- --------
Change of Heart  Teddy Thompson  Upfront & Down Low Verve Forecast  *
Hey, no wonder this song sounds so comfortably familiar. I played it last week. Still, I'm coming around to Teddy's country effort. The guy can sing, and these songs are great, of course.
Not Ready to Love  Rufus Wainwright  Release the Stars Geffen  *
See, the fact that Rufus spends so much of his time building gigantic orchestral sounds around him makes these quiet intimate moments even more powerful. This song is heart-crushingly beautiful.
--------  --------  -------- --------
Whiskey, Bob Copper and Me  Linda Thompson  Versatile Heart Rounder  *
One more from the Thompson family. Teddy's mom has a new album hitting the stores in a couple weeks, and it's brilliant. This cut pays tribute to the late great patriarch of the Copper Family, one of Britain's most important folk music resources. I was lucky enough to see them several years back, thanks to the efforts of our own Judy Stein, host of Sunday morning's invaluable Family Reunion program.
Lowlands of Holland  Peggy Seeger  Three Score and Ten Appleseed  *
Eliza Carthy and Martin Carthy, who accompanied Linda on that last song, are members of a pretty major English folk music family themselves. Here, they are joined by matriarch Norma Waterson paying tribute to Peggy Seeger (of an American folk music family of some renown, who was married to Ewan MacColl, father of Kirsty MacColl) on her 70th birthday.
Raggle Taggle Gipsies  Waterson: Carthy  Broken Ground Topic
I'm gonna stop my family connections here, with this stone classic from the Waterson:Carthy line-up we've seen so many times here in St. Louis, again thanks to Focal Point and Judy Stein.
--------  --------  -------- --------
Things Behind the Sun  Nick Drake  Pink Moon Island  *
Reissued and remastered, a classic original of English folk.
Beauty Way  Eliza Gilkyson  Our Town Tonight Red House  *
Her dad wrote the music for "The Jungle Book." Her brother used to be in X. I'm just sayin'.
--------  --------  -------- --------
Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall  Ann Wilson  Hope & Glory Zoe  *
Well, knock me over with a feather, but I've fallen in love with this soon-to-be-released all covers project from the singer of Heart. Here, she's joined by Rufus Wainwright and Shawn Colvin for a dramatic re-think of the Dylan song.
Every 24 Hours  Peter Case  Let Us Now Praise Sleepy John Yep Roc  *
Playing guitar and singing harmony, it's Richard Thompson on this lead-off cut from Case's first album for the year's best record label, Yep Roc.
A Better Man  Nick Lowe  At My Age Yep Roc  *
Nick Lowe is singing better than he's ever done before, making this a record for the ages.
Fuss About Nothin'  Ian Hunter  Shrunken Heads Yep Roc  *
I think this might be my favorite song on a record chock full of keepers. This album is sneaking up on me. I liked it from the first, but I'm starting to love it.
--------  --------  -------- --------
Dame Una Sena  Los Straitjackets  Rock En Espanol Yep Roc  *
The great Big Sandy sings "Gimme Little Sign" in Spanish, with producer Cesar Rosas helping out on background vocals.
Muswell Hillbilly  Southern Culture on the Skids  Countrypolitan Favorites Yep Roc
Party album of the year! (Although for a real party, mix this one with the Los Straitjackets, and the dance floor will never get a rest.)
--------  --------  -------- --------
Smells Like Teen Spirit  Patti Smith  Twelve Columbia  *
Taking a song which got way more respect than it deserved, and making something brilliant of it, with banjos no less!
We Gotta Get Out of This Place  Ann Wilson  Hope & Glory Zoe  *
Ann and Wynonna absolutely claim this Animals classic for themselves. Stunning!
--------  --------  -------- --------
God Put a Smile Upon Your Face  Mark Ronson  Version RCA  *
Another all-covers album, but I don't have any idea who did the original of this. I do know the Daptone Horns kick butt on it.
Nothing But a Heartache  Detroit Cobras  Tied & True Bloodshot  *
My fave song on an album full of great ones. Anybody know who did the original?
Long White Cadillac  The Blasters  Trouble Bound Hightone
The Blasters will be at Beale on Broadway next Friday, Aug. 3, and at Euclid Records earlier (5 pm) for a sneak preview. If you saw them last year, you know, and if you missed them last year, you can't imagine.
--------  --------  -------- --------
Big Moon  John Doe  A Year in the Wilderness Yep Roc  *
John Doe will be performing a house concert Wednesday Aug. 8. Info at woodconcerts.com. I like Doe best when he sings the blues, as on this cut.
Twenty Miles  Melody Den  Melody Den Perdition  *
This St. Louis band will have its CD release party at Off Broadway in two weeks, on Aug. 11.
--------  --------  -------- --------
Too Hot to Sleep  Eilen Jewell  Letters From Sinners and Strangers Signature Sounds  *
You gotta love those old-fashioned songs with the big reverby guitars.
River  Madeleine Peyroux  Half the Perfect World Rounder
Peyroux brings in kd lang to help sing this Joni Mitchell masterpiece.
