| John TOWNES VAN ZANDT was born on March 7, 1944 in Fort Worth, TX. He was the son of a wealthy oil family whose ancestors had helped found his birth city. He spent a short part of his teenage years in a mental hospital diagnosed with manic-depression, now called bipolar disorder. He was influenced musically by Houston-based blues legend Sam “Lightning” Hopkins, Hank Williams and Bob Dylan. In 1968 he went to Nashville and made his first album, For The Sake Of The Song. He recorded mainly on smaller labels and combined with Townes’ erratic lifestyle, commercial success never came. However, artistic success “seemed to walk beside him”, as Guy Clark, Steve Earle, Lyle Lovett and Rodney Crowell, among others, have cited Townes as a major songwriting influence. He released fifteen albums in his lifetime, the last being 1995’s No Deeper Blue, and several albums of material have been released posthumously, including a tribute album called Poet. Townes Van Zandt died of a heart attack on New Year’s Day 1997 in Mt. Juliet, TN at the age of 52. |

| Kenneth C. “JETHRO” BURNS was born March 10, 1920 in Conasauga, TN, outside Knoxville. At age 12 he and his brother entered a talent contest to be broadcast on WNOX but didn’t win. However they, along with Henry D. Haynes and another lad were chosen to form a station band called the String Dusters. Henry eventually became Homer and Kenneth became Jethro, forming one of the great comedic teams in music history. After WWII they recorded on the King label for several years. They signed with RCA a had a big hit parody with June Carter, Baby It’s Cold Outside, with author and composer Frank Loesser insisting that the label include “with apologies to Frank Loesser”. They became known as “the Song Butchers”, and moved in 1950 to Red Foley’s new Ozark Jubilee, out of Springfield, MO. Are you old enough to remember the mid-60s TV and radio spots for Kellogg’s Corn Flakes, featuring Homer & Jethro and the tag line, “Ooh, that’s corny”? Jethro was Chet Atkins’ brother-in-law and they recorded as part of the Country All Stars in the 50s and as part of the Nashville String Band in the early 70s. Jethro experienced a second career when, following Homer’s death in 1971 from a heart attack, he teamed up with the late Steve Goodman for almost a dozen years until Goodman’s death in 1984. Jethro died February 4, 1989 and he and Homer Haynes were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001. |
