Playlist for Sound Salvation on July 23rd, 2010.

    Song Title Artist Album Label
Ain't Nobody Home  Bonnie Raitt  Streetlights Warner Btothers
Opening the show with a little bonus cowbell - I really like the album Streetlights, with that nice little 70s funk vibe, but how could they keep her from playing slide guitar on even one track?
Sign Language  Eric Clapton  No Reason to Cry Polydor
A Bob Dylan song with his Bobness singing "harmony" vocals - actually a lovely little song I'd never heard before this week.
Sign on the Window  Bob Dylan  New Morning Columbia
Despite these two songs, there is no evidence that Bob Dylan had anything to do with the 5 Man Electrical Band song "Signs."
    --------  --------  -------- --------
Knockin' On Heaven's Door  Television  The Blow-Up ROIR
Probably my favorite version of this Dylan masterpiece.
    --------  --------  -------- --------
Beside You  Van Morrison  Astral Weeks Live at the Hollywood Bowl Listen to the Lion
It's amazing that Van Morrison could so totally inhabit these 40 year-old-songs when he decided to revisit his classic album. Stunning stuff.
El Dorado  Jim Lauderdale  Patchwork River Skycrunch  *
Nice harmony vocal from the great Patty Griffin here - also a pretty good band: James Burton on guitar, Al Perkins on steel, Garry Tallent on bass, and Ron Tutt on drums. I'm not sure who Gordon Mote on keyboards and Steve Sheehan on acoustic guitar are, but they're in great company, only on this and one other track, alas.
    --------  --------  -------- --------
Cummins Prison Farm  Tommy Bankhead  Bankhead Deep Morgan
The incredible harmonica playing on this harrowing cut is by Keith Doder, St. Louis blues great who passed away the other day.
Rain So Hard  Otis Taylor  Clovis People Telarc  *
The most unique take on the blues these days is coming from this intense performer - after seeing a Youtube video the other day, he's moved very high on my list of must-see artists.
    --------  --------  -------- --------
The Boxer  Simon & Garfunkel  Bridge Over Troubled Water Columbia
Fred Carter, Jr. played on a whole lot of records - he was apparently a major contributor to the arrangement of this song, working out a lovely part with Paul Simon of interlocking acoustic guitars. He passed away the other day.
Lay Lady Lay  Deana Carter  The Chain Vanguard
Fred Carter, Jr. also produced a talented daughter, Deana, who payed tribute to the songs her father played on with this album back in 2007. Fred plays on this track, though, despite many assertions that he did, he may not have actually played on Dylan's original.
    --------  --------  -------- --------
I'm So Cool  Carlene Carter  Stronger Yep Roc  *
I'm so confused - I thought this just came out, but allmusic says 2008.
    --------  --------  -------- --------
Way Out West  Big Star  Radio City Ardent
Bassist Andy Hummell, one of the founding members of Big Star, passed away the other day. This was the song he wrote and sang.
You Get What You Deserve  Big Star  Radio City Ardent
Here's hoping Jody Stephens, the drummer and last surviving member of Big Star, has a long, long life ahead of him.
My Love Explodes  Dukes of Stratosphear  25 O'Clock Virgin
XTC pretended it was 1967, and honestly, I like this better than the real Pink Floyd.
    --------  --------  -------- --------
The Next Big Thing  The Dictators  Dictators Go Girl Crazy Epic
How have I forgotten to play this cowbell classic all this time? With my vast financial holdings, I could have been basking in the sun in Florida. This is just a hobby for me. Ya hear? A hobby!
If You Don't Love Me (I'll Kill Myself)  Pete Droge  Necktie Second Sony
One of the few artists from the dark ages of 1994 who really impressed me - and he knew the value of a cowbell.
Living in the Future  Bruce Springsteen  Magic Columbia
I played this album the other night for the first time in a long time - holy cow! It's way better than I remembered. And it has cowbell.
    --------  --------  -------- --------
Love is the Drug  Roxy Music  Siren Virgin
Everywhere I turned this past week, I heard cowbell. The reunited Roxy Music will be on the Jonathan Ross show on BBC America tonight.
Slave to Love  Bryan Ferry  Boys and Girls Virgin
And one more from the Roxy vocalist, because he really pumps up the cowbell on this gorgeous little number.
Twice If You're Lucky  Crowded House  Intriguer Fantasy  *
I can't wait to find the time to really sit down and listen to this new record - everything I've heard has been excellent.
    --------  --------  -------- --------
Wake Up the Nation  Paul Weller  Wake Up the Nation Yep Roc  *
A short and sweet rocker from Mr. Weller's fine new record.
Banks of the River  Peter Case  Wig Yep Roc  *
In town at Off Broadway tonight at 8, and at Euclid Records at 5.
Watch Her Move  Peter Wolf  Midnight Souvenirs Verve
    An amazingly well done vocal!
    --------  --------  -------- --------
Undesired  Alejandro Escovedo  Street Songs of Love Fantasy  *
My initial listen to this record was a bit disappointing, but each time I play one song on the radio, I'm very happy. Definitely need to give this a better chance with the ears.
    --------  --------  -------- --------
Alibi  Shelby Lynne  Tears, Lies, and Alibis Everso  *
I love the hurt and resignation and anger in Lynne's voice here - sometimes she's just plain great.
Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad  Bettye LaVette  Interpretations: The British Rock Songbook Anti  *
Bettye, love has to be so sad so you can share that ache in your voice - although, actually, while this is a nice arrangement, it doesn't actually burn with the heartbreak of the original.
So Far So Fast  Peter Karp & Sue Foley  He Said She Said Blind Pig  *
A beautiful little song about the part of love that isn't sad or in need of an alibi.
    --------  --------  -------- --------
Young Girl  Eli Paperboy Reed  Come and Get It Capitol  *
I'm fairly sure he signed to Capitol so he could use that old 60s swirly label they had on their 45s.
Wheel of Fortune  Jimmie Vaughan  Plays Blues, Ballads & Favorites Shout! Factory  *
Lou Ann Barton sings the heck out of this bluesy r'n'b number.
Somebody Lied  Downchild  I Need a Hat Linus
Canadian blues band understand the pain of the recession.
    --------  --------  -------- --------
Livin' In a Worl Gone Mad  Dumpstaphunk  Listen Hear Dumpstaphunk
These guys were in town last week - I missed them, but they are clearly worthy heirs to their Neville Brother fathers. (Oh, and they rock the cowbell, too.)
Caravan  Dirty Dozen Brass Band  My Feet Can't Fail Me Now Concord
The Dirty Dozen tackled Ellington on their debut album back in 1984.
You Ain't No DJ  Big Boi  Sir Lucious Left Foot . . . The Son of Chico Dusty Def Jam  *
Just try to resist this rhythm - I can't.
    --------  --------  -------- --------
Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way  Chuck Prophet  Dreaming Waylon's Dreams Evangeline
A very limited edition run of this Waylon Jennings tribute album came out a few years ago - fortunately you can still get this stuff digitally.
Loose  Ray Wylie Hubbard  A. Enlightenment B. Endarkenment (Hint: There Is No C) Bordello  *
Saw Mr. Hubbard rock out on the Jimmy Fallon show last week - one of these days I've got to stop being lazy and actually see the man live.
