Soul cover of the Loretta Lynn song recorded in 1967 & released on the South Cap label. Produced by Spooner Oldham.

Hard Times  Baby Huey & The Baysitters  The Baby Huey Story: The Living Legend Water

Written by Jimi Hendrix & recorded in 1968.
It's Your Thing  Cold Grits  What It Is! Rhino
Instrumental version of the Isley Brothers song recorded for Atlantic in 1969.
    --------  --------  -------- --------
Touch The Hem Of His Garment  Sam Cooke with the Soul Stirrers  The Complete Specialty Recordings Specialty
Gospel song written by Sam Cooke & recorded in 1956.
I'm Drunk & Real High (In The Spirit Of God)  Ada Richards  Good God! Born Again Funk The Numero Group  *
New compilation of rare funk & gospel unearthed by The Numero Group. Ada Richards was based out of Detroit and wrote & recorded this in 1970. According to the liner notes, she funded her money to record by owning a string of beauty salons.
Wade In The Water  Marlena Shaw  Chess Club Rhythm & Soul Kent
Recorded in 1966 for the Cadet label. Arranged by Richard Evans.
    --------  --------  -------- --------
God's Song (That's Why I Love Mankind)  Randy Newman  Sail Away Reprise
And now for an opposing viewpoint to the previous set. Recorded in 1972. One of my favorite albums, ever.
St. James Infirmary  Allen Toussaint  The Bright Mississippi Nonesuch
From his 2009 release of instrumentals (except for one song). Highly recommended.

    --------  --------  -------- --------
(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party!)  The Hotrats  Turn Ons Fat Possum  *
Ah, the Beastie Boys viewed through a Who filter. I like this a whole lot.
I'm Not Your Stepping Stone  Paul Revere & The Raiders  Kicks! The Anthology 1963-72 Raven
Written by Boyce & Hart and released in 1966 several months before the Monkees version.
Leaving Here  Eddie Holland  The Complete Motown Singles: Vol. 3 - 1963 Hip-O Select / Motown
Written by Holland-Dozier- Holland & recorded in 1963. Eddie Holland had some wonderful singles even though stage fright kept him from performing live, much.

    Music bed. 1968 instrumental.
    --------  --------  -------- --------

Trop Expres  Marianne Dissard  l' entredeux Le Pop Musik
2008 recording produced by Joey Burns (of Calexico) and featuring Calexico as the backing band. This song was co-written by Marianne Dissard & Joey Burns. For those of you headed on down to SXSW this year, Marianne Dissard will be performing.
I'm Gonna Catch Me A Rat  Fabienne Delsol  Between You And Me Damaged Goods
Recorded in 2007. This song was originally recorded by Gene Vincent. This concludes the French portion of the show.
    --------  --------  -------- --------
Zebra  Beach House  Teen Dream Sub Pop  *
New release from the duo formed in Baltimore in 2005. I'm hoping their next release is a concept album about Cockeysville.

Song from my favorite album of 2006.
    --------  --------  -------- --------

Dylanesque song from their 2001 release.
    --------  --------  -------- --------
Harmonica  Troubadour Dali  Troubadour Dali Euclid  *

    --------  --------  -------- --------
Lonely Is A Town  Glossary  Feral Fire The Rebel Group  *
New release from the band based out of Murfreesboro, TN. This came out on Lucero's record label and Glossary is currently opening a bunch of shows for Lucero.
The Courage of Others  Midlake  The Courage of Others Bella Union  *
Beautiful song from their new release. [Editorial comment - tempo changes are not a sign of weakness.]
    --------  --------  -------- --------
Nice Of You To Join Us  Grand Champeen  "dial T for this" In Music We Trust
2007 recording from the Austin-based quartet. They are long overdue for a new recording.
We Used To Think The Freeway Sounded Like A River  Richmond Fontaine  We Used To Think The Freeway Sounded Like A River Arena Rock  *
New release from the Portland-based band. One of their finest albums, I think. Their lead singer, Willy Vlautin, also has a new novel coming out in April. Talented band. I just wish they would tour the U.S. once in a while instead of just Europe.
    --------  --------  -------- --------
House of Gold  Patty Griffin  Downtown Church Credential  *
Hank Williams song off her new gospel-themed release. Patty Griffin & special-guest Buddy Miller (who produced this album) will be appearing at the Pageant on Friday (March 26).

2009 version of the Mississippi Sheiks instrumental.

The Night Rider  Speedy West & Jimmy Bryant  Stratosphere Boogie: The Flaming Guitars Of Speedy West & Jimmy Bryant Razor & Tie
Amazing 1956 instrumental featuring Speedy West on steel guitar & Jimmy Bryant on the Fender Telecaster.
Atom & Evil  Golden Gate Quartet  Atomic Platters Bear Family
1947 gospel song about the perils of the atomic age. "Now brothers and sisters, I’m troubled to say / Brother Atom is gone astray / Listen, listen, listen, listen, listen / This is the story of Atom and Evil / Their courtship is causin’ a great upheaval / Now Atom was a sweet young innocent thing / Until the night that Miss Evil took him under her wing / Now Atom was an honest, hard workin’ man / He wanted to help out the human clan / But Evil got him drunk on prejudice and hate / And she taught him how to gamble with Humanity’s fate / (So true!)"
Fannin Street  Tom Waits  Glitter & Doom Live Anti-
Beautiful live version recorded during his 2008 U.S. tour. Will somebody please do an in-depth interview with Kathleen Brennan, sometime? I think it would be really interesting since she has co-written most of Tom Waits' songs for the last 25 years.
Interlude  Moris Tepper  Big Enough To Disappear Candlebone
Music bed. 1996 instrumental by the sideman to artists ranging from Tom Waits & Captain Beefheart to PJ Harvey & Frank Black.
    --------  --------  -------- --------
Ninety Miles An Hour (Down A Dead End Street)  Bob Dylan  Down In The Groove Columbia
Alright, I'll give you that this 1988 release wasn't one of his better efforts but I love this song. This song was made famous by Hank Snow & was written by Hal Blair & Don Robertson. What an amazing soul cover this could have made. I think Dylan realized that and he took that approach. Now, if only James Carr would have got a hold of this. Willie Green & Bobby King perform the background vocals on this track.
Done Wrong  Moris Tepper  Big Enough To Disappear Candlebone
Really nice ballad from his 1996 release.
Hold On You  Jeff Bridges  Crazy Heart ST New West  *
Jeff Bridges handles the vocals on this song co-written by Stephen Bruton, T-Bone Burnett, John Goodwin & Bob Neuwirth. Jeff Bridges just does a fantastic job in this role. Both the soundtrack & movie are highly recommended. This movie would make a great double-feature with "Tender Mercies."
