On the 2009 release, Mama, I'm Swollen, the veteran Omaha band lurches from smoky lounge pop to alt-country shuffles to torrentially grungy climaxes, sometimes in the same song. What holds it all together is singer and songwriter Tim Kasher's brutal lyrical honesty, whether he's aiming his pen at the dogmas of religion, romantic anguish or the "mass upward mobility" of consumer culture.
