Over 200 artists/acts stopped by the Magnolia Avenue Studios in 2009 to record live sessions for broadcast on 88.1 KDHX; we look forward to even more in 2010. Our space was renovated with live on-air performance in mind. Reopened in January of 2005, the Magnolia Avenue Studios have become a popular stopping point for artists appearing in and traveling through Saint Louis. It looks like the word is out! The Drastics may hail from Chicago, but the band's sound, full of reggae hooks and expert dub, can evoke beaches, breezes and the hot vibe of an island dance hall. Get carried away during their live session on Ska's the Limit.
As the blues head into the 21st century, the music needs more artists like John Mooney. Even as he rides the sure and strong rails of tradition, he remains as forward-looking as a bullet train from New Orleans to Chicago. Hear the guitar slinger and singer work a mean resonator slide during a live solo session on Blursday.
Cedric Burnside and Lightnin' Malcolm reinterpret the blues
while staying true to its roots. The widely celebrated duo brought its
blend of electric blues, Southern rock and funk to a live session.
Wack-A-Doo, a St. Louis-based, vintage swing jazz quartet, will have your toes tapping to their muted horns, zinging flutes and crazy kazoos. Bob your hair and hike up your skirt as the accordion, the "fancy" guitar and the hi-hat shaker make you want to Charleston all the way through this time machine of a live session, airing August 28, 2010 on the Musical Merry-Go-Round.
