Playlist for Sound Salvation on July 3rd, 2009.

    Song Title Artist Album Label
Well Alright  Blind Faith  Blind Faith Polydor
A slightly different take on the Buddy Holly classic - lots of fun, I think.
This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both of Us  Sparks  Kimono My House Island
There ain't nothing else out there that sounds like this one.
Stairway to Gilligan's Island  Little Roger and the Goosebumps  The Krusty 70s's Vol 41 self
I've heard about this song for 30 years, but only know, thanks to trusty Ken from Cockeysville and his astounding series of 70s mix CDs, have I finally been able to hear it.
    --------  --------  -------- --------
    Treason  Teardrop Explodes  Kilimanjaro Fontana
My goodness, that first album is chock full of catchy tunes - this one's like psychedelic ska.
    Friction  Television  Marquee Moon Elektra
I wrote about this album a couple weeks back in my ongoing series, "Albums of My Life" at the Euclid Records blog: http://euclidrecords.blogspot.com/2009/06/albums-of-my-life-1977-television.html
    --------  --------  -------- --------
Young Girl Down the Street  Otis Taylor  Pentatonic Wars and Love Songs Telarc  *
The most wide-ranging hard-to-classify and get a handle on blues artist of our time. Hypnotic, entrancing, and explosive.
Richland Women Blues  Ramblin' Jack Elliott  A Stranger Here Anti-  *
Just a sweet version of an old Mississippi John Hurt song.
    --------  --------  -------- --------
I Want to Take You Higher  Sly & the Family Stone  The Woodstock Experience Sony Legacy  *
You know, most of the performers at Woodstock didn't give one of their best shows. Sly and company, however, were on fire.
    --------  --------  -------- --------
Feel It (Don't Fight It)  Sam Cooke  Live In Harlem Square RCA
Holy cow - if you've never heard this particular live album, you've only got the barest hint of how great Sam Cooke could be.
Conquer the World Together  Bunny Sigler & Dee Dee Sharp  Conquer the World Philadelphia International Legacy
It's still hard to believe a record this perfect, as transcendent as any Marvin & Tammi duet, couldn't chart back in the day, but there were just so many great soul records being made at the same time. They couldn't all be hits.
Oh Little Boy (What Did You Do to Me)  Mary Wells  Definitive Collection Motown
I never heard this cut until the other day, and now it's in my top three or four Mary Wells songs of all time.
    --------  --------  -------- --------
Don't Touch Me (I'm Gonna Hit the Highway)  Johnny Guitar Watson  Hot Just Like That Ace
Oh, I could listen to Johnny Guitar Watson all day long - he's a brash vocalist, and one heck of a dynamic guitarist. And, of course, that 50s r'n'b sound is one of my faves. (Not that I don't also love his 70s stuff, which put him in a different but equally great context.)
Boogie Woogie Country Girl  Big Joe Turner  Blues Masters Vol. 14: More Jump Blues Rhino
As driving a beat as you can find - and I dig that wild piano. Oh, yeah, and the vocals kick butt.
    --------  --------  -------- --------
It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)  Ella Fitzgerald & Duke Ellington  Live at Cote d'Azur Verve
Swing this hard means even more. You have been warned: if you wear a pacemaker, be extra careful.
    --------  --------  -------- --------
My Sweet Love  John Mellencamp  Life Death Love and Freedom Concord
I didn't make it out to the ballpark in Sauget last night, but I'm fairly sure those who did saw a pretty good show. Here, in order, we'll hear the participants.
Blue Skies  Willie Nelson  Stardust Columbia Legacy
One of America's greatest vocalists, and the caretaker of its rich legacy of songs in a wide variety of styles.
Life Is Hard  Bob Dylan  Together Through Life Columbia  *
A song that sounds as though Irving Berlin might have written it (or more likely Hoagy Carmichael, but I had to compare it to the author of "Blue Skies," didn't I?)
    --------  --------  -------- --------
Rock Lobster  The B-52's  The B-52's Warner Brothers
This week's "More Cowbell" segment starts off with a dance classic which featured some highly distinctive cowbell playing.
Hazy Shade of Winter  The Bangles  Essential Bangles Sony
They're gonna be playing at the Springfield IL State Fair next month, along with Heart. You bet I'm gonna be there.
    --------  --------  -------- --------
The Horse In Motion  Ha Ha Tonka  Novel Sounds of the Nouveau South Bloodshot  *
So, yesterday I saw a guy wearing a Ha Ha Tonka State Park t-shirt; how is it I never heard of this place until I discovered the band, and now I hear of it all the time?
Cannibal Resource  The Dirty Projectors  Bitte Orca Domino  *
These guys may drive me crazy in a few weeks, but so far, I'm hearing interesting things on this record.
Two Weeks  Grizzly Bear  Veckatimest Warp  *
My fave song on the record that is still working its way slowly into my consciousness.
    --------  --------  -------- --------
Wilco (the song)  Wilco  Wilco (the album) Nonesuch  *
It may be a goofy thing to write a song with your band name as the hook, but you gotta admit, it's the biggest hook on the album. I read some short review somewhere which referred to the llama pictured on the cover - somebody needs to be told llamas don't have humps - that's a camel.
Dust of Daylight  Son Volt  American Central Dust Rounder  *
So Jay Farrar and Jeff Tweedy, who used to be together in Uncle Tupelo, have new albums out with their respective bands at almost the same time. Can you blame us unimaginative dj's for playing them next to each other?
    --------  --------  -------- --------
Candy's Room  Bruce Springsteen  Darkness On the Edge of Town Columbia
My thoughts on this record are here: http://euclidrecords.blogspot.com/2009/06/albums-of-my-life-1978-bruce.html
My Friend the Sun  Peter Holsapple & Chris Stamey  Here and Now Bar None  *
A cover of a song by 70s band Family. Note to self: Gotta listen to some Family. This is a great song.
    --------  --------  -------- --------
Not Another Song About California  Grant Langston  Stand Up Man MSG  *
I don't know anything about him, but this album is chock full of clever and catchy country songs. And guitar!
Tennessee Jed  Levon Helm  Electric Dirt Vanguard  *
I love that Levon Helm is making music capable of standing next to the best stuff he ever did when he was younger.
    --------  --------  -------- --------
Wine Me Up  Tanya Tucker  My Turn Saguaro Road  *
Tanya's new album is full of classic country covers - this is a Faron Young hit made new.
The Crooked Line  Elvis Costello  Secret, Profane & Sugarcane Hear Music  *
Elvis sings this one with Emmylou Harris. Next Saturday night, July 11, Costello will join Sheryl Crow for some songs during her show down on the riverfront for Live on the Levee.
    --------  --------  -------- --------
The Coo Coo Bird  Steve Forbert  The Place and the Time 429
In one more day, that pretty bird will holler coo-coo.
Messin' With the Kid  Junior Wells  Blues Masters Vol. 4: Harmonica Classics Rhino
One of those masterpieces that never gets old.
Mellow Mama Blues  Dinah Washington  Mellow Mama Delmark
A young Ms. Dinah with some spectacular blues in her throat.
    --------  --------  -------- --------
Hey Ya  Booker T.  Potato Hole Anti-  *
This instrumental cover of the Outkast hit just plain kicks butt.
River Is Waiting  Irma Thomas  Simply Grand Rounder  *
One of our greatest singers takes on one of our greatest songwriters (John Fogerty, for those of you not paying attention to his excellent recent solo records).
    --------  --------  -------- --------
Gasoline & Matches  Buddy & Julie Miller  Written In Chalk New West  *
Knock me out, rock me off my axis / You and me are gasoline and matches. Now that's some rhymin'.
Julie  Bobby Fuller Four  I Fought the Law Rhino
A very Buddy Holly-ish little number.
The Groove  Ike Turner  Ike's Instrumentals Ace
Oh, how I love the distinctive guitar stylings of Ike Turner.
    --------  --------  -------- --------
    Super Bad (Pts. 1 & 2)  James Brown  The Singles Vol 7 (1970-1972) Hip-O Select  *
One of a seemingly endless supply of astoundingly funky grooves Mr. Brown cranked out back in the day.
Shake Baby Shake  Champion Jack Dupree  Blues Essentials Charly
A different kind of boogie to end the show. Happy fourth of July tomorrow, and if you're of a mind, come out and say hello as Cat and I spin music at the Royale from 6 to 10 pm tonight. We'll be on the patio on a gorgeous night.
