STL Free Jazz Collective & Douglas Ewart

The STL Free Jazz Collective with special guest artist Douglas R. Ewart, world renowned multi instrumentalist from the AACM, will join us for a free concert on Saturday, December 2, 2017 at 7:30pm.  The concert will be held at the 14th Street Artist Community Center at 2701 N. 14th Street 63107.

The STL Free Jazz Collective was recently named to St. Louis Magazine's "A-List" for 2017 for including "some of the city’s leading purveyors of the improvisational avant?garde jazz tradition—so wild and untranslatable, it’s just called that 'St. Louis Thing.'"  LaDonna Smith of the Improvisor said, "I find your music full of energy and life, the sound is authentic and distinctive, and it is indicative of a very healthy jazz scene in St. Louis."

Douglas R. Ewart will join us as we explore spontaneous creativity in a free jazz style.  We will also perform a selection of Ewart's compositions.  Our sets also include the poetry of St. Louis Poet Laureate Michael Castro who is no stranger to poetry/music collaborations, having performed with jazz artists in the United States and Europe for decades.

Michael Castro, poet
Baba Mike Nelson, trumpet, shells, multi-instrumentalist
Jerome "Jay Dubs" Williams, alto saxophone
Jim Hegarty, piano and electronics
Paul Steinbeck, electric bass
Gary Sykes, drums and percussion
