Black Holes and Hawking Radiation - Dr. Carl Bender, Dept. of Physics, Washington University

A black hole is a region of space that is so massive and so compressed that its gravity overwhelms everything in the area. The gravity is so strong that nothing, not even light, should be able to escape it. However, Dr. Stephen Hawking proposed a way for some particles and energy to be emitted at the boundary of the black hole. The escaping particles are called “Hawking radiation”.  Professor Carl Bender will discuss the nature of black holes and the ‘Hawking radiation” they may emit. Co-sponsored by St. Louis Astronomical Society and NASA MO Space Grant Consortium at Washington University
